Xavier Institute of
Management
About the Institute :-
Xavier Institute of Management, Bhubaneswar was conceptualized as a
result of a landmark agreement (Social Contract) between the Jesuit
Society of Orissa and the Government of Orissa. The management of the
institute is in the hands of a Governing Board, consisting of
representatives from the Jesuit Society, Government of India,
Government of Orissa and eminent industrialists and educationists. The
institute started functioning in 1987 and today it is one of the
finest management institutes in country.
Nestled in the lush surroundings of the famed "temple city" of
Bhubaneswar, XIMB (as it is more popularly known) is an oasis of peace
and tranquility. But let not the peace fool you, XIMB is a dynamic
and innovative B-school, continually demanding the highest levels of
excellence from itself, its faculty and perhaps most importantly, from
its students. There is no question that this institute has come a very
long way in its 17 years of existence. Right from the start it chose
to benchmark its standards against the very best business schools
across the world. The same uncompromising standards hold just as true
today as the institute continues to innovate to ensure the very
highest standards of education for its students.
The
Post Graduate Diploma in Management
(equivalent to an MBA) is the institute's flagship programme. It takes
young men and women, who have already proven themselves amongst the
elite in India academically and helps hone their abilities to become
groundbreaking leaders in the corporate world.
In addition, the institute offers a
Post Graduate
Diploma in Rural Management, Executive Management Programmes
(Residential and Non-Residential) and a
Fellow
Programme in Management
for those wishing to carry out research at the Doctoral level. XIMB
has an established
Management
Consultancy
Wing,
consisting of highly experienced faculty members and professional
persons. It provides effective support to the social sector
development in Eastern Zone of India and Orissa in particular, but has
also worked in different parts of the country as well. Besides, the
consultancy wing gives critical inputs to various projects supported
by DFID, the World Bank, European Union and several other funding
agencies. It also acts as a policy advisory body for the State as well
as the Central Government.

Campus and Facilities
Accommodation/Hostel Facilities :
With the
classes spread-over, group assignments and a system of regular
evaluation and monitoring of students' performance, students are
encouraged to live on campus. There is a 192 room hostel for men.
The ladies' hostel has 48 single rooms and 12 double rooms and 36
double rooms for PGPRM students. Each room has a Network point with
access to the campus resources and the Internet. With the
installation of laser printer and xerox machine, round the clock
printing and copying facilities are available to the students. The
Mess is managed by a students' committee and serves both vegetarian
and non-vegetarian meals. An online cafe provides variety of fast
food to students who work till late in the night. The hostel also
houses the Multi-Purpose Hall, the COOP, the Book Club, and two STD
booths. Several washing machines have also been installed for the
use of students.
The Executive hostel has 48 single rooms (bath attached and
furnished) and a mess managed and run by the Institute.
Class Room
Complex :
The class room complex includes lecture halls, syndicate rooms,
multimedia hall, and executive class room. The class rooms are
equipped with educational audio-video equipments, computers with
large monitors, LCD projectors, Network connections, and are
air-conditioned for providing a conducive environment. While most
classes are held in the lecture halls, some prefer the lawn adjacent
to the class room complex for the education with a difference.
2 Air conditioned amphitheatres, 3 Air conditioned lecture halls, 8
Syndicate rooms, 1 Multimedia hall, 1 Executive class room.
Sports : XIMB is one of the few campuses which prepare
students for the corporate wars by providing the best sports
facilities. The fitness freaks can find solace in working out in the
well-equipped gymnasium. Cricket, football, basketball, volleyball,
lawn tennis and table tennis are the popular campus sports. We also
have an indoor badminton court for the use of students.
Computing : The Information Technology infrastructure is a
significant factor in providing quality management education.
Computer Resources Centre provides IT resources to students, faculty
and staff. The Institute provides PC work stations to all faculty,
students and staff. This includes a PC for each student in the
hostel room. In addition, there is a Computer Centre with about 50
work stations. All the computers are connected to the Campus LAN
which is supported by a Fibre Optic backbone. The CRC has built an
impressive library of software packages useful for management
education and IT specialisation. These include Compilers, Office
Productivity softwares, Data Base, Statistics, and Operations
Research, Graphics etc. Last year, the CRC has implemented many
applications in the Institute. These include Academic Information
System, Alumni Information System, and Project based Accounts
System. We have a vibrant Intranet where all members of the XIMB
community contribute. The Intranet showcases our zeal and desire to
It enable all our functions.
The communication and information related services over the network
are growing. These include internet related services as Web and the
email, Library database such as, IBID, EBSCO and corporate database
from CMIE. We are planning to acquire a midrange server along with a
ERP software.
7 Servers based on NT, Netware, Linux, 500 Work Stations, More than
100 Software Packages, 24 hour Internet access (1 MBPS leased line),
PC in each hostel room, Campus LAN connecting all PCs.

bookworm's paradise, the XIMB Library has excellent collection of
books and magazines on management and related subjects. Bound
volumes of Periodicals, Working Papers, Dissertations, Summer
Projects, Videocassettes and Annual Reports of Corporate Companies
are some of the major features of the Library. Besides the print
materials, the Library provides access to electronic information
sources such as EBSCO Publishing, ACM Digital Library, IEEE Society
Journals and ISI Emerging Markets Database. While EBSCO Publishing
covers 2800 journals with full text, the ISI Emerging Markets gives
detail information about Indian Business and Industry. This database
covers CMIE, which gives information on 6000 companies. The Library
Information System (LIS) is computerized and is connected to the
Campus Network as well as World Wide Web.
26500 Books, 3000 Journals (including electronic Journals), 2500
Bound Volumes of Periodicals, 1000 Dissertations & Summer Projects,
300 Video Cassettes, 500 Working Papers, 400 Company Annual Reports.
Students: Each year 120 students enroll for the PGP programme
and 50 for the PGPRM programme. The Institute has a rigorous
screening procedure for admitting students. The admission procedure
is tough as only 1 out of every 100 applicants make it to the
institute thus ensuring that only the best and the brightest reach
here. Though students from Engineering background easily outnumber
others, every year we have a rich blend of Arts grads, CAs, Commerce
grads, Doctors, etc. who liven up the atmosphere on campus. All the
students are drawn from prestigious institutes and a variety of
backgrounds. Moreover every batch is a good mix of students with
varying work experience as well as fresh graduates. It provides a
good opportunity for them to interact, share each other's
experiences and enhance the mutual learning.
XIMB offers an extraordinary environment for its students. Staff,
faculty and students share an intimate relationship. The diversity
and rich mix of experience, background and culture, coupled with
shared traits of talent and high aspiration, produces an
inspirational vitality and enriches learning inside and outside the
classroom
XIMBians are groomed for two rigorous years to be self-starters.
They are versatile enough to combine individual brilliance with team
effort to deliver a final solution to the corporate houses that
match their needs. And most importantly, they are trained to do this
under pressure situations experienced in real life situations.
There is a continual buzz around the XIMB campus, a feeling of
excitement and eXuberance (the name of our campus placement
programme) that comes when people are working, having fun and above
all learning together in a rich and rewarding environment: an
environment which enables individuals to expand their horizons.
Campus: For any institute that aspires to deliver management
education of international standards, the best possible
infrastructure is an imperative. Since it was first established XIMB
has had a continuing commitment to maintain and continuously upgrade
infrastructure to rival any top B-school. From being one of the most
technology intensive campuses in India to the ever-expanding library
resources, XIMB ensures that the students are fully supported in
their learning to achieve their full potential.
The newest addition to the XIMB facilities is a state of the art
700-seater auditorium. This is unique in the state of Orissa and
will serve as a valuable facility to further enhance the learning
experience for our students. XIMB had recently inaugurated their
fully equipped Management Development Programme building, fondly
referred to as the MDC. It houses the practicing managers, who visit
XIMB to sharpen their managerial skills and add new dimensions to
their schemata of knowledge.
The Library offers an excellent array of the latest books, magazines
and journals on all aspects of management as well as many other
areas. Strenuous efforts go in to ensure that these resources are
continually added to from the very best of new publications.
The XIMB IT infrastructure is world class and first of its kind in
India. A personal computer is provided to every student in his or
her hostel room, networked through the intranet. All classrooms are
centrally air-conditioned and are equipped with computers connected
via Wi-Fi, projectors and all the other equipment for a modern
learning environment.
The students have access to excellent sports facilities, which
include a cricket/ football field, indoor badminton court, jogging
track, multi-gym, floodlit tennis and basketball courts and a
multi-purpose hall for indoor sports such as carrom and table
tennis.
Academics:
The Postgraduate Programme in Management is the flagship
programme of the Institute, comparable to the MBA level programmes
of premier business schools in India and abroad. While the programme
is based on the standard model of management education as practised
by XIMB's peers, it is distinguished by its rigour and discipline.
The Institute has created an environment where the faculty demand
and get the extra work and students demand the latest from the
faculty. The programme updates its syllabus regularly to reflect the
changes and challenges in business environment. Besides this there
are regular CEO talks and Immersion Courses, by renowned
personalities from various walks of industry.
Xavier Institute of Management also emphasizes the need to expand
the use of management science to rural sector in the form of
creating managers not only for corporate sector but also for the
booming rural sector through its Postgraduate Programme in Rural
Management. The institute also provides fellowship programmes and
part time Postgraduate Programmes in Management.
The Institute also conducts Management Development Programmes in all
functional areas of management. These programmes are meant to
provide basic managerial inputs to executives with out a formal
Managerial Training and to refresh and appraise current managerial
thinking and techniques to practicing executives.
Extra Curricular: XIMB also provides opportunities to
students to gain expertise and management experience with a host of
opportunities, right from handling the institute's media & PR,
running the hostels and mess to organizing the annual inter-B-school
meet- Xpressions. The Students' Executive Council comprising of
elected members from various associations and committees and headed
by the Student General Secretary ably assisted by a Cultural
Secretary and Treasurer, form the unified voice of the students.
Students are instrumental in conceptualizing both, India's largest
first online stock game (Dalal Street) and soft skills test (Skill
City), which are competitions open to students as well as
professionals. The Rural Marketing Fair is also one of its kinds
organized by a B-school in India.
A variety of clubs and associations provide an invaluable extension
beyond classroom learning. They provide unique opportunities for
students to implement their ideas, acquire new skills through
interaction with practitioners from business and practice their
organizational abilities. These associations are also involved in
providing consultancy in their domains, organizing regular contests,
events, immersion courses, and talks.

members to run their affairs. Some of these committees have earned
nationwide repute for their innovative ideas and work.
Placements: The placements in XIMB show the position it holds
in the corporate world. Aided by economic boom and alumni support,
the Xavier Institute of Management, Bhubaneswar (XIMB), has emerged
as one of the favourite hunting grounds for the corporate
recruiters. The institute has achieved 100% placement for its
2002-2004 batch surpassing all its previous records.
Within only 30 hours of start of placement season, all the 116
students (PGDM batch) were grabbed by various companies. But more
than the number of offers, it is quality of jobs and salary packages
received by the students, which is important. The average salary
